Skill Level: Beginner

You’ll Need:

  • ThunderShirt
  • Poster board
  • Tissue paper
  • Glue gun and glue sticks
  • Foam visor (or make your own with a sheet of foam and elastic)
  • Sombrero
  • Carpet tape

Step 1: Measure your dog’s length from neck to start of tail.

Step 2: Measure width of poster board to dog’s length. Trim if necessary.

Step 3: Fold poster board in half. Draw collar shape onto poster board and cut out.

Step 4: Layer tissue paper together. Cut strips about 3 inches wide.

Step 5: Make 2.5” incisions in the tissue paper, creating a fringe look.

Step 6: Glue the strips of fringe to the outside of the poster board, overlapping each strip about 2” over the previous one. Alternate colors every 2 strips. Tip: Around the collar, you can fold the tissue paper under and glue to the bottom side.

Step 7: Repeat the same layering process on the foam visor to create the collar piece.

Step 8: Put the ThunderShirt on your dog. (Instructions are here if you need help.)

Step 9: Place strips of carpet tape on the ThunderShirt and remove the backing. Then place your piñata-ized poster board on top of the carpet tape and press gently to adhere.

Step 10: Slide the elastic band of the collar piece over the dog’s head and add the sombrero!

Pro Tip: After Halloween the ThunderShirt can be safely removed from the costume to resume regular use!
